7) Controlling the materials when finishing the fly

Once all the materials have been wrapped on and tied off it is time to finish off the fly. Many flies will have long materials at the front. These will often get in the way when you need to do the next step which is called “building a thread head.” You can control these materials in one of two ways

The first method involves using your thumb and two fingers. Place them together as shown. Notice the small opening in the middle.

Next place this arrangement over the hook eye so the eye is in the opening shown in the previous step.

Now slowly pull back until enough of the hook is exposed so you can make the extra wraps needed for the thread head.

This method works well in most cases. With smaller or shorter hooks, you can often prick yourself on the hook point as you pull back. Also on some flies there is so much material that it is hard to control them this way. Another method involves using a piece of drinking straw. The larger ones used for “slushies” work well.

Cut off a piece of straw about 2 cm long

Slit the piece of straw length wise with your scissors. This is necessary so the straw can slip over the thread that is hanging down.

Have the slit part facing down. You will need to part the straw at the slit with your fingers. Pass the piece of straw over the hook’s eye and materials.

Let go of the slit area. Then push the straw back until the right amount of hook is exposed for finishing off your fly.
