Letter writing

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to effectively express their ideas and opinions in a letter writing Format.

Materials Needed:

  • Computers connected to the internet

Activity:

Review proper letter writing format with students. Also review providing reasons for opinions.

If you feel it is necessary, Have students connect to the internet, go to www.kidfish.bc.ca, click on the "Stewardship" icon and review the material in this section

A) Option One

If students have already adopted a body of water, have them write a letter to you describing it, sharing their discoveries (temperature, depth, acidity) as well as any concerns or ideas they have for preserving and protecting their area. (e.g. picking up garbage)

B) Option Two

Have students write a letter to the local paper (or for a class newspaper) expressing their views. Possible themes are: 1) the importance of stewardship in general. Why should we protect our environment? 2) a genuine concern the student(s) may have about a body of water. If you plan on sending these into the paper be sure to get parental permission for each child. Most papers will not print letters from students without it!

Another Possibility

This same idea can be done in an editorial type format like those found in the newspaper. Share some examples of editorials from local papers. Discuss the format and lay out. Have students write an editorial about the importance of Stewardship.
