Materials Needed:
Activity: Have students connect to the internet, go to www.kidfish.bc.ca, click on the "Stewardship" icon and read the "Be an activist" and "Be a responsible fly-fisher" sections. This can be done together as a group or individually. If students are going to do this individually have them complete the Activist Survey for review of the material. A) Brochure Discuss with students the purpose of a brochure. Show examples to indicate what makes some brochures effective and others not. After discussing the various ways of protecting our water sources, have students make a brochure informing people how they can protect and be a positive influence around our bodies of water. The brochure is geared for people who don't know anything about the topic so students can't assume the reader of the brochure will be knowledgeable. Brochures should be informative by giving reasons for actions, be neat and eye catching. Teachers may want students to plan out their ideas first before beginning the final copy. A successful format is to use an 11 by 14 piece of paper folded into three sections. Using the front and back students will have 6 areas to use for their brochure. B) Video Discuss with students the purpose of commercials and infomercials. Show examples to indicate what makes some effective and others not. After discussing the various ways of protecting our water sources have students make a video infomercial informing people how they can protect and be a positive influence around our bodies of water. The video is geared for people who don't know anything about the topic so students can't assume the viewer of the video will be knowledgeable. Videos should be informative by giving reasons for actions and creative. Teachers may want students to plan out their ideas first before beginning the final copy. |
