Seasons of a lake

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to make notes from the information in this section to complete a comparison chart that shows the changes that occur in a lake over the seasons.

Materials Needed:

Activity:

Hand out Lakes Worksheet #S-6

Students need to log onto www.kidfish.bc.ca. and click on the "Our Lakes" icon. Students then need to click on "seasons of a lake" in blue print.

Have students read this section and make notes on the worksheet as per instructions.

Season Conditions in the Lake
Winter plants are dying or becoming dormant, oxygen being used up, no more oxygen into lake until spring, ice over lake
Spring oxygen used up, Ice melts, winds bring oxygen into water, lake turns over, becomes murky then clears, plants and algae begin to grow,
Summer More plants grow, produce oxygen, water gets warmer, top layer oxygen rich, fish live near surface for food and oxygen
Fall Lake cools, winds cause turnover, oxygen throughout water, fish live throughout lake, fish feed a lot
