Map Art
Design
Concepts:
- enlarging, line, shape,
shading
Materials
Needed:
- 8.5' x 11" paper
- Lakes Worksheet #A-1a (Nukko
Lake) and Lakes Worksheet #A-1b (Wicheeda Lake)
- Playing cards (an old
discarded deck is fine)
- Pencil (other possibilities:
pencil crayons, felts, paint)
Activity:
- Provide a choice of two maps
from the two worksheets listed. This will ensure a variety of student art.
- Have the students examine the
map for an interesting part in terms of design
- Hand out a playing card to
each student
- The students should place
that card over the interesting section they have chosen. Trace around the card
with a pencil. (See example below).
- Remove the card and cut out
the section that has the line around it.
- Draw the image from this
section onto 8.5" x 11" paper, enlarging the image so it occupies the whole
page. Shade in the various areas to reflect what was on the cut out piece. (See
examples below).
NB: It is very easy to
smudge the shading. To avoid this make sure students keep another paper under
their hand to protect the drawing surface.
Other
Possibilities:
- Instead of shading with a
pencil, do it in colour using pencil crayons or felts. You can decide what
colour theme you wish the students to pursue. Examples: different shades of
blue, using only cool colours, using only warm colours, utilizing opposite
colours, or whatever colours the student likes.
- Sketch out the design on 11'
x 17' paper and paint. Again, you will need to decide what colour theme you
want to pursue. (see above for possibilities)
