Memory Game This lesson deals with the specific aquatic fish foods discussed in this section. Objectives:
Materials Needed:
Activity: The end result of this activity will see pairs of students being able to play the memory game with a deck of 22 cards. Have students work in pairs. Each student receives 12 cards. (You may want to get a volunteer to cut out the needed cards for your class prior to this activity) Have students connect to the Internet and go to www.kidfish.bc.ca Once the students have accessed the website, they should click on the Aquatic Fish Foods icon. After this they should scroll to the bottom of this section where it has the various foods listed. (Midges, Leeches, Caddis flies, Scuds, Water boatmen, Damsel flies, Dragonflies, Mayflies, Stoneflies, Craneflies, Mosquitoes) Each student pair should then divide the list up so that each student is responsible for half the list. NB: There are 11 foods listed (an uneven number). Each student pair will have to figure out a way of splitting the task for one of the foods. For each food listed, 2 cards need to be made. One card will have an illustration of the critter in its adult stage. The other card will contain information about the critter without a written mention of the name. The information should give obvious clues. For example a card about midges (chironomids) might read: In their larva stage, they often have a red colour. They are the most important food source for trout in this province. They look like mosquitoes and range from 2 to 25 mm in size. Make sure one side of the card remains blank After each student pair has completed 2 cards for each critter, have them combine all the cards so that the blank sides face one way. Shuffle the cards and lay them out on the table face down in a rectangular arrangement. Normally when a memory game is played there are pairs of cards that have the same image on them. Each player is allowed to turn up two cards. If they dont match they are turned face down again. If they do match, the cards are left face up and that player may continue by turning up two more cards. The players turn is over once a mismatched pair has been turned over (and placed face down again). The last player to turn over cards so that all are face up wins. With the cards that go together for this game, one has an image and the other information. Play the game in the same way as described above. The student needs to verbally say what the match is.
