Lesson #1

Choose a region of the province and write a postcard to a friend describing the landscape, climate, forests and animals of the area.

Objectives:

  1. The student will be able to locate information in the “Our Environment” section of www.kidfish.bc.ca to summarize the environment (landscape, climate, forests, and animals) of a region in the province.
  2. The student will be able to utilize the above information to create a postcard detailing the environment of a region of choice.
  3. The student will be able to use the writing process to refine what has been writen
  4. The student will be able to illustrate the front of their post card in a way that is representational of the chosen region.

Materials Needed:

  • Computers connected to the internet
  • Paper for note taking, pencil, pencil crayons, post card size card (bristol board cut to post card size), fine tipped black felt

Activity:

Have students connect to the internet, go to www.kidfish.bc.ca, and click on the “Our Environment” icon. Have them select a region of British Columbia (Coastal, Interior, Central Interior, Northern Alpine, or Southern Gulf Islands) that they will describe on their postcard.

Have students take notes on the landscape, climate, forests and animals of their region. If students choose a region other than the Northern or Central Interior Region they may need to do additional research to cover all topics.

Once notes are taken, students should follow the writing process for the written side of their postcard. Final copies could be gone over with a black, fine tipped felt pen for effect.

Students should then illustrate the front of their postcard to represent their region of choice
